Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) has organised a environment conference that will bring together 120 Catholic bishops from eight countries in Africa.

TEC Secretary General, Father Dr Charles Kitima, told journalists at Kawekamo pilgrimage centre that the 10-day conference will be held in Mwanza in July, next year.

He mentined countries that will participate in the conference as Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Djibouti.

Dr Kitima said the conference will reflect on environmental stewardship and caring for the world, noting that all 34 bishops from the dioceses of Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar will participate.

Meanwhile, he said they have decided to encourage afforestation and other means of environmental protection with the aim of ensuring that the Earth becomes a safe place to live.

“From this this November, every family should think of planting trees surrounding their homes, every ward should have forests as well as village to have village forests,” Dr Kitima said.

He said they are inviting the government to join hands with religious leaders in tree planting campaign.

Dr Kitima said whenever there is a parish they will send a forestry expert to advise how to plant trees in a particular area considering climate of the area.

“Environmental protection education will be provided and the communities will be educated on tree planting. We have reached this stage due to severe weather conditions,” said Dr Kitima.

He said the tree planting exercise is expected to motivate people to plant trees.

Dr Kitima asked the communities to develop a culture of planting trees at their surroundings.
