Africa-Press – Tanzania. TABORA Regional Commissioner, Ambassador DrBatildaBurian, has applauded Japan Tobacco International (JTI Leaf Services) company for its efforts to protect environment, improving agricultural activities and social services in the region.
The remark was proclaimed on Thursday when she was inaugurating a tree planting programme to mark a new season for tobacco growers at the event held at Utemini and Maswanya villages in Ndono and Kakola wards, Uyui district.
She said apart from its key role of buying tobacco from farmers through their primary societies (AMCOS), JTI LS has shown practically its concern on the environment and support to farmers and the entire community.
She clarified that the company has supported the government tree planting efforts by providing free seedlings and planting mechanisms, hence urging tobacco growers to plant more trees.
DrBuriancommended the company for a good job done on promoting good agricultural practices to up growers’ efficiency, increase production and keep environment clean.
She briefed that the government has direcred each district to plant not less than 1.5 million trees each year, adding that till now more than 10,000 seedlings have been planted in the region in collaboration with stakeholders.
“I commend the good job done by JTI LS on improving agricultural activities, environment and social services for communities, this is what other stakeholders should emulate,”she said.
The Company Agro Forest Manager, AlfadhilMakengo, briefed that JTI LS is a community oriented company which works in collaboration with the government for the betterment of tobacco growing communities.
He said the company provides free quality seeds and other materials to growers, education on good agricultural practices, social services as well as maintaining environment.
Tanzania Tobacco Board Officer Oscar Simwanza clarified that according to tobacco act no. 24 of 2021 all tobacco growers should have tree farms as a vying mechanism to evade destruction of the environment.
He added that tree planting programmes and use of modified barns for efficient wood consumption is a continual mission, hence advised the primary society leaders to encourage their people to participate fully and use the improved barns.
