Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), has pledged to provide financial support for strategic development projects being implemented in Tanzania.
Upon completion, the projects will improve the living standard of individuals as well as stimulate agriculture, livestock and tourism. The pledge was issued by the ADFD Director General Saif Al Suwaidi during his brief meeting with the Tanzania delegation that was led by Minister for Finance and Planning, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba in Abu Dhabi, recently.
He said the fund has been working closely with the government of Tanzania, saying apart from supporting the country through soft loans and grants; the ADFD is now looking forward to investing in Tanzania’s agriculture and tourism sector.Mr Suwaidi also assured to link Dr Nchemba and the Zanzibar’s Minister of State, President’s Office, Finance and Planning Jamal Kassim Ali to the members of the private sector in Abu Dhabi for the latter to invest in Tanzania.
“There are a lot of things that need our combined efforts, especially on pushing forward our development and the bilateral ties, we are also looking forward to investing in the productive sectors in Tanzania,” he said. The ADFD boss was responding to a request that Dr Nchemba had issued earlier on the fund to support Tanzania on implementation of its strategic development projects.
Some of the projects include construction of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Power Project (JNHPP) as well as housing projects for education, health, agriculture and livestock sectors.
The minister noted that completion of the SGR line from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza will stimulate the economy and development activities. It will also open up different opportunities in the great lakes region.
For his part, Mr Ali said Zanzibar needs to be sighted on implementing a construction of 10,000 low cost residential houses to be sold to members of civil service and the general public. “We also want further investment in oil and gas, health, enhancing tourism as well as construction of the port of Manga Pwani that will have multiple purposes and play a crucial role in building our economy,” he said.
The ADFD has so far supported construction of different projects, including the Were-Pemba hospital, KidaweUvinza road, Kagera sugar and supply of water in rural areas of Zanzibar. Right now, the fund is financing the construction of the Uvinza-Ilunde to Malagarasi road at a cost of 15 million US dollars.
