Africa-Press – Tanzania. MEMBERS of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and Local Authorities Accounts Committee (LAAC) of the House of the Representatives have been equipped with skills to perform their duties efficiently.
This was after they participated in a two-day capacity building seminar held at the OCGS building in Unguja. According to the PAC Chairman, Mr Juma Ali Khatib, the seminar sought to provide them with knowledge on the role and functions of the PAC and LAAC including how to make follow-ups on queries raised in the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports.
Mr Khatib said after a presentation made by senior officers from the Office of the President (Finance and Planning), the members have become aware that they were responsible for going through the CAG report and working on it after it was handed over to the President.
“Our committees- PAC and LAAC play a key role in ensuring that the government’s allocated funds are used for intended purposes in various public institutions,” the PAC chairman said, adding that their role is also to push for the implementation of Integrated Financial Management System (IFMS). He said that IFMS is important in collecting government revenue and ensuring proper spending, “The EFMS system prevents cheating and theft.
Our objective is to do inspections and ensure that government funds are spent as planned.” He commended the President’s Office (Finance and Planning) for organizing the seminar which has helped them get more knowledge on fulfilling their responsibilities including monitoring government revenue and expenditure.
He asked the ministry to continue providing them with the training as they still need it for improving their functions. Mr Shamata Shaame Khamis, the Deputy Chairman of LAAC, said they learnt of how the IFMS works in institutional systems and its importance in tax collection.
