Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Office of the Chief Government Statistician-Zanzibar (OCGSZ) has said that the balance of trade showed a deficit of 81.3b/- last November. This implies an increase of deficit by 68.5 per cent, compared to the corresponding month of 2020 and by 21.2 per cent compared to the previous month of October 2021.

“Trade ratio decreased from 21.5 per cent in October 2021 to 18.9 percent in November 2021,” Ms Asia Hassan Mussa, statistician, said here when presenting the monthly external merchandise trade statistics for November 2021 to journalists, at the OCGSZ office, Mazizini area in MjiniUrban, Unguja.

Ms Mussa said that November 2021 recorded a total exports value of more than 18bn/-, which is an increase by more than 100 per cent, compared to November 2020 and by 2.9 per cent compared to previous month. “Food and live animals section contributed 69.7 per cent (13.2bn/-) of the total exports in November 2021,” she said, adding that this is according to the Standard International Trade Classification- SITC under the ‘Food and live animals section’ which deals with cloves and other spices; seaweeds and other sea products.

She said that top five trading partners for exported goods in November 2021 accounted for 87.0 per cent of the total value of exported goods. Major export destination was Singapore that accounted for 49.6 percent (9.4bn-) of the total export in November 2021. The other countries with valued export in brackets include Spain (4.7bn.), India (970m/-), Czech Republic (712m/-), and Congo Brazzaville (636m/-) mainly trading cloves, seaweed, and fish sardine.

The statistician said that November 2021 recorded a total import value of more than 100.2bn/-, which increased by 99.6 per cent compared to November 2020 and by 17.2 per cent compared to previous month. Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials contributed 36.8 per cent (36.9bn/-) of the total value imported followed by manufactured goods classified chiefly by material (14.0 per cent), she said at the press conference.

The top five trading partners for imported goods in November 2021 contributed 72.5 per cent of the total import. Imports were mainly from United Arab Emirates (41.2 per cent, about 41.2bn/-
