AfricaPress-Tanzania: ZANZIBAR authorities have closed down all institutions of learning after confirming the first case of coronavirus, but the third in the United Republic of Tanzania.

Zanzibar Health Minister Hamad Rashid Mohamed announced that one of the three people whose sample was taken to Dar es Salaam on Tuesday for testing was positive.

“As a result of this the following measures should be taken. All schools nursery, primary, Quran schools (Madrassa), secondary and higher learning institutions should be closed with immediate effect,” Mr Mohamed said.

The minister asked members of the public and the media to join in the war on coronavirus by not panicking, but relying on authentic news, going to hospital in case of any symptom and giving information on any suspected visitors.

The minister noted that the patient had been isolated in a quarantined centre of Kidimni, while health officers intensified on spot testing at all entry points and that there would be also surveillance at entry points to Zanzibar.

Funerals, sports, seminars, weddings and any other events which attract many people should be restricted at least by few people and that foreigners with suspicious health should come out for quarantine in quarantine facility.

Mr Mohamed also warned traders, particularly those selling masks and sanitisers against unnecessary price hike at this time when demand for the equipment was high.
