Africa-Press – Tanzania. A number of tourist arrivals in Tanzania has more than doubled (+117.7 percent) this year compared to corresponding period last year, thanks to deliberate efforts by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Featuring President Samia, the ‘The Royal Tour’ film is being described as an important one of the factors played a pivotal role in revamping the sector which was negatively affected by COVID-19.
As the East African state experiences the massive growth of the sector, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) calls for service providers to prepare for an even further projected surge.
“Within the period of month January through May 2022, tourists have increased to 89,271 from 42,173 tourists recorded the corresponding period in 2021,” announced Daniel Masolwa, NBS acting director for economic statistics during a press conference in Dar es salaam on Thursday.
Giving comparative statistics for five Mr Masolwa highlighted that tourists who visited Tanzania increased to 458,048 in a period between January to May 2022 which is a 44.4 percent increase from 317,270 who visited the country in a similar period last year.
He called for tourist service providers in the country to be prepared for booming business as more is yet to come.
He said that if the trend is maintained, the government’s projection to 1.5 million tourists per year might double.
Out of the figure, Mr Masolwa said “French Tourists grab lion’s share in visiting Tanzania, were for the period of January to May, a total of the European nationals who visited Tanzania were 28,115, followed by Poland with 22,651,”
He added that other nationals touring Tanzania are from USA (21,661), Germany (16,527) Britain (14,136 and India (13,641)
Most of the visited areas and sites, according to him, were tourist visited natural attractions, national parks, cultural tourism and Zanzibar beaches, most of which were not well known globally until the royal tour film did the advertising
“Hadzabe community is an emerging destination, where many tourists wish to visit people who are still living by following all traditions in life aspects socially and economically,” Masolwa revealed.
