NAMANGA border between Tanzania and Kenya is safe and the state of insecurity that occurred at the frontier has already been fixed accordingly, the government assured here yesterday.
Defence and National Service Minister Dr Hussein Mwinyi gave the assurance while answering a supplementary question by Leader of the Opposition Camp in Parliament Freeman Mbowe.
Mr Mbowe, who is also Hai Member of Parliament (MP) on Chadema ticket, had wanted to hear the government’s statement on security of the country due to violence that recently occurred at Namanga border after Kenyans denied entry to their territory vehicles transporting cargo from Tanzania.
Dr Mwinyi admitted that some chaos erupted at Namanga border but was later dealt with by other security organs and peace and tranquility were restored to normalcy.
The minister assured the house that the situation at the border was safe and there was no any misunderstanding between the two countries.
Some Kenyan media had reported that there was a standstill at the Kenya–Tanzania border, with Namanga residents having demonstrated against Tanzanian police arrest of a Kenyan at his shop on the Kenyan side.
