Anti-poaching campaign gets UNDP boost

Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA’s efforts to fight poaching have received a boost after the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) donat- ed ten vehicles to intensify the fight.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism Mr Illimani Sedoyeka said the support will contribute significantly to steps being taken to fight the malpractice.

“We have seen the number of endangered wildlife increasing due to various measures undertaken to combat poaching.

We express our gratitude to UNPD for donating these vehicles which will be used to make sure that wild ani- mals are protected for the benefits of the current and future generations,” he said.

The PS added that his ministry recognises the role of cooperating with partners like UNDP in support- ing government efforts in conservation and manage- ment of wildlife resources.

He promised that the vehicles received will be used as part of concerted response by law enforcing organs to tackle poaching in different national parks and game reserves in the country.

“With this support, it is my belief that perpetrators of wildlife crimes will face more formidable and coor- dinated response from law enforcers especially at eco- system level in the tasking and coordinating group,” he said.

For her part, UNDP Resident Representative MS Christine Musisi said that it was a pleasure for the global body to work closely with the government of Tanzania in promoting conserving wildlife and the ecosystem.

She said UNDP recognizes that Tanzania has always been at the frontline in stewarding protec- tion of wildlife and therefore cooperation which has been there in capacity building in activities would be prolonged for a brighter future.

“UNDP will continue to partner with this ministry and the government of Tanzania to protect natural inheritance,”
