Africa-Press – Tanzania. COAST Regional Commissioner (RC) Mr Aboubakar Kunenge has expressed his intention to start working on expanding marine economic activities and make it one of the main contributing sectors to the region’s economy.
Mr Kunenge spoke of the plan during the Regional Business Council (RBC) on Wednesday in Kibaha Town, insisting that it is high time the region started benefiting from the water resources.
“Our region is blessed with abundant natural resources including being surrounded by water. If we start to engage in serious marine economic activities we will expand the regional income, including expanding the tax base,” he said.
Giving an example, Mr Kunenge said the region had an opportunity to benefit from fishing and other marine activities but the region was still yet to fully exploit its potential.
Expounding, Mr Kunenge said that the sixth phase government has been putting much efforts in environment protection and expanding blue economy by establishing friendly environment for the private sector to invest without complications.
“There are a number of opportunities in marine sector, not fishing alone. These include aquaculture, coastal and marine tourism and renewable marine energy. All these can bring a lot of economic benefits if we start working on them seriously,” he added.
On the other hand, RC Kunenge said that the newly constructed Madafu- Misugusugu’s 12.5 kilometres road at Zegereni industrials area in Kibaha Town Council will sustain weights of heavy trucks, which carry goods to and from the industries. He mentioned that the road is one of the initiatives that the government is doing in improving industrial sector.
