Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE International Crop Trust has commended the Tanzanian government for its efforts to improve the agricultural sector and pledged to continue close collaboration in increasing crop production and productivity for the nation’s benefit.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, responsible for Crop Development and Food Security, Dr Stephen J. Nindi, met with a delegation from the International Crop Trust, led by Dr. Benjamin Kilian and Joanna Purcell, in Dodoma.

During the discussions, the Crop Trust delegation outlined the institution’s activities in Tanzania and other countries, including the conservation of crop biodiversity, improvements in seed production systems, and the strengthening of agricultural research aimed at increasing crop productivity and resilience.

The meeting also involved experts from the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA), the World Vegetable Center, as well as representatives from the Training and Research Department and the Crop Development Department of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Nindi emphasized the importance of strengthening efforts to protect agricultural biodiversity through collaboration with various stakeholders. He requested additional support to build the capacity of field officers, enhance technology transfer centers, and further develop the Gene Bank to ensure access to improved crop varieties in the country.

The Crop Trust representatives commended the Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, for its efforts to improve the agricultural sector and pledged to continue close collaboration to achieve set goals, particularly in increasing crop production and productivity for the benefit of the nation.
