Africa-Press – Tanzania. MINISTER for Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Dr Dorothy Gwajima, has unveiled a new board of trustees of the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH), with the call to work closely with the public.

The minister said here yesterday that the board was a bridge between the hospital’s management and the public, saying that all public hospitals’ boards of trustees in the country should work closely with the public.

“I direct all public hospitals’ boards of trustees to work closely with the public because they are the bridge between the management and the people,” said Dr Gwajima during an event to unveil the board of trustees of the BMH.

The seven-member board of trustees of the BMH is chaired by Dr Deo Mtasiwa, former Chief Medical Officer. She directed the new board to develop strategic public relations to work closely with the public for the members of the later to be aware of the medical services offered by the BMH.

She hinted that the BMH would become a second national hospital because it had played a great role to curb referrals to abroad during the six years of its existence.

“The hospital has helped the government to reduce referrals to abroad from over 500 cases to only two cases for the past six years. The hospital has also relieved the burden to Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) by serving more people who would travel all the way to the MNH,” said the minister.

On his part, BMH Executive Director, Dr Alphonce Chandika, expressed gratitude to the previous board of trustees, noting that the board had played a great role in the achievements of the hospital.

“The board of trustees has played a great role in the achievements of the hospital by leading us to bring about great transformation,” said the hospital’s boss.

On his part, Dr Mtasiwa, assured the Minister to carry out all the directives, attributing the great achievement of the hospital with good management of the hospital.

“We will work hard to attain the goals set by the government and develop strategic public relations to enable the public to be aware of our medical services,” he said.
