Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) has been identified as an appropriate platform for seeking lasting solutions to challenges facing member states, particularly issues of peace, security, and sustainable development.

This was stated in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), during the Ordinary Meeting of ICGLR Ministers, which was opened by the DRC Prime Minister, Judith Tuluka Suminwa.

In her opening remarks, the Prime Minister noted that despite progress made, ICGLR member states have not yet achieved the core objectives of the Treaty that established the organization, including lasting peace and security.

She urged member states to strengthen unity, cooperation, and solidarity in addressing challenges facing the region, emphasizing that lack of financial resources and poor infrastructure within and between member states remain major obstacles to achieving the organization’s goals.

The Tanzanian delegation at the meeting is led by the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Said Shaib Mussa.

Tanzania expressed its support for all agenda items being discussed, including peace and security, and stressed its continued commitment to contributing significantly to efforts aimed at restoring and maintaining peace in the region, as it has done in various countries.

Leaders who delivered remarks at the opening session emphasized the importance of ICGLR member states developing internal strategies to address their challenges rather than relying on external assistance.

They also underscored the need to strengthen regional institutions by providing them with adequate human and financial resources to enable them to effectively address issues, particularly those related to peace and security.
