Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government is finalising plans to transform the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) into a fullfledged authority, to strengthen its legal mandate and improve financial sustainability.
Deputy Minister in the Vice-President’s Office (Union and Environment), Mr Khamis Hamza Khamis, announced the move in the National Assembly yesterday while responding to Mpendae MP Toufiq Salim Turky (CCM), who raised concerns about NEMC’s operational and budgetary limitations.
“The transformation will empower NEMC to enhance environmental inspections, education outreach, and revenue collection through zonal offices and a larger workforce,” said Mr Khamis.
He noted that updated 2024 environmental levy regulations and an improved revenue collection system are already being implemented, alongside a national database to track projects subject to environmental charges.
The upgrade is expected to bolster enforcement, decentralise service delivery, and increase accountability in environmental protection.
