Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has directed the Ministry of State in the President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG) to intensify close supervision on nuisance contributions from parents which have created a public outcry.

The Prime Minister issued a directive in the august House yesterday when moving a motion to adjourn the budget session in line with the government’s efforts to implement Free Basic Education Policy in the country.

The Premier maintained the government’s stance and commitment to providing free education from the primary to advanced level education.

According to Mr Majaliwa, many lawmakers raised their voices over nuisance contributions in schools when debating the 2022/23 national budget.

He insisted that the government through its legal directive issued in 2015 provided its stance on issuance of free basic education and that the money to implement the policy ought to be channeled to schools directly from the treasury for all operational costs at schools.

“I want to state categorically here that 10 per cent of the money is used to buy electricity, water and pay security officials at schools, therefore, I want to direct PO-RALG in collaboration with all regional secretariats and councils to monitor the money provided by the government as well as ensuring that there are no contributions that have brought a huge public outcry,’’ he noted.

The Prime Minister further directed that from now on, all joining instructions in schools are verified and given blessings by Regional Administrative Secretaries (RASs) in collaboration with Regional and District Education Officers countrywide.

Mr Majaliwa paid tribute to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for fully implementing the 2015-2020 CCM manifesto which pledged free basic education to provide education to all children of the country.

Meanwhile, Premier Majaliwa said preparations for the National Population and Housing Census slated for August 23rd this year, has reached 87 per cent.

He used the platform to urge Members of Parliament as they head back to their respective constituencies to educate and sensitise their electorates on the importance of taking part in the crucial exercise for the development of the country.

“I also call on all Tanzanians to be ready for being counted,” he said, while insisting that it is important for everyone to offer maximum cooperation to census officers for the exercise to run smoothly.

He said the census will provide the government with adequate data to help measure, monitor and estimate the extent to which the country has made progress on the national development agenda and also the data collected will guide the government to measure the socio-economic status of the people.

Meanwhile, Premier Majaliwa has said the government intends to start implementing the new systems to assess performance of its executives and heads of institutions based on their capacity to manage public funds and execution of development projects.

He also said that the executives will be assessed basing on their ability to manage provision and remittance of 10 per cent of loans provided by the councils to women and youths, supervision of internal source revenue and expenditure, as well as implementation of the Controller and Auditor General (CAG) recommendations.
