Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIA: WITH Cyclone Hidaya looming closer to the Tanzanian coast, Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has issued urgent warnings to communities to take necessary precautions against the impending storm.

TMA has confirmed that tropical storm Hidaya, initially identified as a minor air depression, has now intensified into a cyclone with moderate strength, positioned approximately 506 kilometres east of the Mtwara coastline.

“As per the May 1 this year report, which mentioned the existence of a moderate air depression in the Indian Ocean near Mtwara’s eastern coast, the depression has intensified further and is now known as cyclone “Hidaya,” according to a statement released by TMA.

TMA further stated that the cyclone is anticipated to make its presence felt from last night, May 2, this year and is projected to persist until May 6.

It is anticipated that this development will dominate and have an impact on the nation’s weather systems, resulting in periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds in certain regions of Mtwara, Lindi, Coast (including the Mafia Islands), Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Morogoro, Zanzibar, and Pemba islands, as well as neighbouring areas.

“This is especially the case on May 3, 2024, for coastal areas in the south (Lindi and Mtwara), and it will spread to other coastal areas from May 4 to May 6, this year,” TMA explained.

TMA emphasises the importance of preparedness and vigilance in response to the imminent threat. Communities are urged to closely monitor weather updates and adhere to advisories issued by the weatherman.

At the same time, those residing in coastal areas are advised to secure their properties, stock up on essential supplies, and heed evacuation orders if necessary.

Furthermore, individuals engaged in maritime activities are cautioned to exercise extreme caution and consider suspending operations until the storm passes.

Seeking guidance from weather experts and following safety protocols are paramount to minimising risks associated with Cyclone Hidaya.

TMA assured the public that they will continue to monitor the cyclone’s trajectory and provide regular updates as the situation evolves.

Additionally, efforts are underway to disseminate crucial information and coordinate response measures to mitigate the cyclone’s impact on communities.
