Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>DAR ES SALAAM: <\/b>The government plans to implement new strategies aimed at boosting the country\u2019s revenue collection to 15 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).<\/p>\n

Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango made this statement during the 2024 Tax and Investment Forum at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Center (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday, noting that from 2010\/11 to 2022\/23, the country\u2019s tax collections have remained below 12 percent of the GDP.<\/p>\n

Elaborating further, Dr. Mpango highlighted that most countries in the same low-middle income class as Tanzania achieve over 13 percent, including Senegal (18.7), Zambia (16.8), Ghana (14.1), Ivory Coast (13.9), and Cameroon (13.3).<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this context, the government has continued to improve policies, laws, and tax management systems in response to investors\u2019 complaints. Our responsibility is to ensure that we enact good laws and create a better environment that will boost trade and investment, allowing taxpayers to fulfill their tax obligations in accordance with the law,\u201d Dr. Mpango stated.<\/p>\n

Providing insight into the government\u2019s efforts, he mentioned that during the sixth phase of government, around 460 legal improvements have been made, representing about 80 percent of the improvements achieved in a short period of time.<\/p>\n

However, the Vice President instructed the Minister for Finance, Mwigulu Nchemba, and the Minister of State for the President\u2019s Office (Planning and Investment), Professor Kitila Mkumbo, to adopt a new and comprehensive tax system that reflects the changes that have taken place in Tanzania\u2019s economic system since the 1990s.<\/p>\n
