Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>ARUSHA:<\/b> TANZANIAN horticultural crops growers and exporters\u2019 participation in the recently concluded European premier fresh produce trade show has started to bear fruits.<\/p>\n

TAHA, the country\u2019s horticultural advocacy and lobbying champion, deployed a delegation comprising growers and exporters to the Fruit Logistica show in Berlin, Germany, to showcase the potential of the industry to export perishables.<\/p>\n

The pavilion of Tanzania\u2019s horticultural champion stood out of the crowd of exhibitors, as potential customers thronged it, each attempting to pen a deal with the TAHA mission.<\/p>\n

The pavilion successfully courted a handful potential horticultural crops buyers and investors in the country\u2019s emerging industry.<\/p>\n

Among the visitors was Daily Green Company, which is interested in buying okra, bitter gourd and African bird\u2019s eye chilli and has so far deployed its officials to Arusha to sign an export deal with the growers, under TAHA auspices.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur customers can\u2019t wait to consume the fresh okra, bitter gourd and African bird\u2019s eye chilli from Tanzania, so, we are supposed to commence massive export anytime soon after all logistics are in place,\u201d the officials said.<\/p>\n

The TAHA Chief Development Manager, Mr Anthony Chamanga, who led the management to the engagement with new buyer, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the country\u2019s multi-million-dollar champion.<\/p>\n

In the contract, the Frankfurt-based Daily Green Company demands 2,340 metric tonnes of Okra per year from the growers worth 3.51 bn\/-.<\/p>\n

The company further demands 2,880 metric tonnes of bitter gourd and 520 metric tonnes of African bird\u2019s eye chilli at 4.32bn\/- and 780m\/-, respectively. Mr Chamanga promised the firm of TAHA backing throughout its transactions with the growers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe largest part of the contract will be preserved for women and youth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The decision to give women and youth high priority was in line with the strategy of TAHA for backing the Building Better Tomorrow (BBT) drive that the Tanzania government is implementing through its parent ministry.<\/p>\n

The drive intends to unlock challenges inhibiting women and youth in effectively participating in agribusiness, mostly lack of access to land, finance, technology and market.<\/p>\n

Mr Chamanga extended TAHA\u2019s gratitude to its development partners for their continued support in enabling the horticultural advocacy and lobbying outfit to participate in the high-status Fruit Logistica trade fair in Berlin.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur search for new buyers of horticultural crops and investors in the international trade show would be impossible without them,\u201d stressed Mr Chamanga, enumerating some of them as the Tanzanian government, Swedish Embassy, World Food Programme (WFP) and the Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe horticultural crops growers, particularly women and youth, accessing the international consumers is a reason for them to smile all the way to the bank for their wallets to be stuffed to the gills,\u201d Mr Chamanga said.<\/p>\n

Analysts believe such contracts on the country\u2019s perishables will go a long way in leapfrogging the industry that grew at 11 per cent before the Covid-19 pandemic took its toll on it. Going by Dr Jacqueline Mkindi, the TAHA CEO, horticulture fetched about 418 million US dollars in 2023, up from 290 million US dollars in 2022, apart from creating thousands of jobs and female and youthful millionaires.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government has developed a strategy to spur horticulture industry to earn the economy $2 billion per year and create decent employment to a critical mass of youth and women along the entire value chain come 2030,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
