Some artists took it to social media after the Head of State, Samia Suluhu Hassan made the death announcement on a televised programme on the national broadcaster TBC 1.

She said Mzee Mwinyi who served as the Tanzania’s second phase President from 1985 to 1995 lost the battle to lung cancer while receiving treatment at Mzena Hospital.

Artists, like other Tanzanians expressed their shock and sadness for the demise of the 98-year former head of State. Peter Msechu mourned in style by composing a special song for Mzee Mwinyi within 12 hours. In some of the verses in his song, Msechu expressed how the fallen former Head of State was a hardworking and a man of wisdom.

He quoted some of Mzee Mwinyi’s saying, which expressed the need for people to respect each other and leave good record after they are promoted to glory. In one of the events, the fallen former Head of State urged Tanzanians to love, respect and value each other.

In his song, Msechu said Mzee Mwinyi was a father and grandfather to many and that his life is good example to many. He expressed the big loss the nation has suffered following his demise and asked fellow Tanzanians to live his legacy. He said Mzee Mwinyi will be dearly missed for his lively and cheerful behaviour.

He concludes by asking Mwinyi to come back for just a moment so they can talk to him and bid him farewell, hoping that the Lord will receive him in peace.

“President Samia mourns you, Tanzanians are crying for you, Mama Siti is grieving, and Dr Hassan Mwinyi is weeping for you. We will miss your wisdom but will remember your wisdom,” reads one of the verses.
