Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>DAR ES SALAAM: <\/b>TANZANIA has unveiled a plan to join the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) which offers immense air transportation business opportunities for the country to generate more income.<\/p>\n

The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) Director General Mr Hamza Johari said in Dar es Salaam on Monday during the awareness workshop that the matter is now at the initial level whereby numerous stakeholders are discussing the opportunities and proper regulations before deciding to join.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a country, we were out of this kind of business purposely to increase and bolster investment in our airlines. Now we see that it is the right time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The three-day sensitisation meeting was staged to discuss major two issues which are the possibility of the country entering the single air transport market and the shaping of the amendment and implementation of new aviation regulations. Under this umbrella, Tanzania\u2019s airlines will have the opportunity to conduct both passenger and cargo business within the African continent without restrictions.<\/p>\n

Speaking about the new and amended civil aviation regulations, Mr Johari said since TCAA manages the sector with regulations, developing them from time to time is a vital thing to meet the market demands.<\/p>\n

On his part, Mr Juma Fimbo, the trainer from the National Institute of Transport (NIT) said this move will enable the country\u2019s airlines to generate more revenues since they will have access to many airports across the continent without restrictions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the current situation, for example, ATCL airlines are allowed to carry passengers and cargo to Kenya because there is an agreement between the two countries but they are not allowed to carry cargo from Kenya to Uganda because it will interfere with the agreement between Kenya and Uganda,\u201d said Mr Fimbo.<\/p>\n

The SAATM is a project of the African Union to create a single market for air transport in Africa and is supposed to allow significant freedom of air transport in the African Continent.<\/p>\n

To date, 34 countries have signed up to the SAATM including Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo Brazzaville, Co\u0302te d\u2019Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea (Bissau), Guinea, and Kenya. Others are Lesotho, Liberia, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Chad, Togo and Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n
