Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>MOSHI, KILIMANJARO:<\/b> PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa is expected to launch the 2024 Uhuru Torch Race at then level in Kilimanjaro region next week.<\/p>\n

Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Nurdin Babu, revealed that yesterday, saying that preparations for the historic event that will be held on April 2 have been completed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis launch is historic due to the fact that this year\u2019s race coincides with the 60th Anniversary of the Independence of Zanzibar, 60 years since the race was officially launched for annual countrywide racing, as well as the 60 years of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

In addition, he noted that, also this year\u2019s race, themed \u2018Conserve the Environment and Participate in Local Elections for the Building of a Sustainable Nation\u2019, will be held when the nation commemorates 25 years since the death of the Father of the Nation, the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who was the first president of Tanzania.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the Uhuru Torch Race in Kilimanjaro region, RC Babu said it is expected to involve a total of 47 development projects worth 28.7bn\/- in the health, education, water infrastructure, roads, bridges and environment sectors, among others.<\/p>\n

He said that of the projects, 13 are expected to be laid foundation stones, 14 will be launched, two will be opened and 18 are expected to be inspected.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the important preparations related to these activities have been completed; may I take this opportunity to request members of the public to come out in big numbers during the launching of the race that will be held at the Moshi Cooperative University (MoCU)\u2019s grounds, on Tuesday, April 2, this year\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Babu noted that the Uhuru Torch Race has been offering opportunities to Tanzanians to learn about the history of their nation, stimulate and mobilise the development processes of the country, as well as building solidarity among Tanzanians.<\/p>\n
