Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>DAR ES SALAAM:<\/b> PRESIDENT Dr Hussein Mwinyi has assured that Zanzibar will continue to remain a staunch supporter of the Union and ensure that it exists, flourishes and grows stronger for the benefit of the present and future generations.<\/p>\n

The Isles President made the assurance yesterday during the national celebrations to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, attended by, among others, seven Heads of State.<\/p>\n

Tanzania is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Union founded on April 26, 1964, by the late Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and former Zanzibar first President, the late Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe decision by the founders to unite the two parties was driven by the desire to strengthen our historical brotherhood,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of the people of Zanzibar, we promise our fellow Tanzanians that we will continue to be sincere supporters of our Union and ensure it exists, flourishes, and grows stronger for the benefit of the present and future generations,\u201d Dr Mwinyi said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe commemorate this day following the decision made by the two founders of our nation, the late Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, and the late Mzee Abeid Amani Karume, to unite what was the Republic of Tanganyika and the Republic of Zanzibar into one nation, Tanzania,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said the United Republic of Tanzania has continued to gain great international reputation and respect due to the Union.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have become an exemplary country for maintaining the Union while upholding peace, unity, and solidarity.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Mwinyi expressed gratitude to all leaders of the past government phases both in Mainland and Zanzibar for their efforts to maintain and advance the Union goals and address the vexes with the same intentions as the founders of the merger.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is comforting and encouraging to see many issues considered as challenges of the Union have been resolved and a few remaining are at various stages of being resolved,\u201d added Dr Mwinyi.<\/p>\n

Dr Mwinyi congratulated Tanzanians for the significant achievements in all sectors of economic and social services within the 60 years of the Union.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has congratulated President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan for emphasising upholding peace, unity and the Union.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour speech has reminded Tanzanians of the importance of continuing to strengthen peace, solidarity, and national unity and the significant benefits of our Union in the social, political and economic lives of citizens,\u201d said PM Majaliwa.<\/p>\n

Majaliwa said that following the directives of the President, this year\u2019s celebrations had many interesting aspects, including the launch of various national projects in both parts of the Union.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cthere have also been social academic debates on the Union, prayers, recognising the contributions of various leaders by giving them special Union awards as part of the commemoration of the merger.\u201d<\/p>\n

The PM said that the instructions given by the President have helped Tanzanians to continue recognising, appreciating, and honouring the values of the Union handed down by the nation\u2019s founders, the late Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, and the late Sheikh Abeid Aman Karume.<\/p>\n
