Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>DODOMA:<\/b> AT least 301.72bn\/- is needed for the rehabilitation of roads, which were damaged following the heavy rains and floods from 2023 to April, 2024.<\/p>\n

Deputy Minister in the President\u2019s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government Authorities), Ms Zainab Katimba told MPs yesterday that the government is aware of the damages caused by the rains from 2023 to 2024 and that the budget has been already allocated to address the problem.<\/p>\n

Ms Katimba was responding to a question posed by Special Seats MP, Slyvia Sigula who wanted to know if the government has a plan to allocate emergency fund to Tanzania Rural and Urban Road Agency (TARURA) so that the agency could immediately start the rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure in various parts of the country.<\/p>\n

Ms Katimba said the assessment of the damage caused by rains was conducted from June 2023 to April 2024 and that a total of 301.72 bn\/- is needed for the rehabilitation purpose.<\/p>\n

She said the damage has been identified in 1742.19kms of roads, 4,260 culverts, 319 bridges and 108,833 metres of drainage systems.<\/p>\n

She added that the other 664 km of road needs gravel. Earlier, the MP, Ms Sigula said there was a need for the government to immediately rehabilitate Sumbawanga road which has been badly damaged.<\/p>\n

She added that Irembo bridge in Mkui ward is also in bad shape and that people can not engage in both social and economic activities because they have been disconnected.<\/p>\n

In response, the deputy minister said many roads were in bad shape in various parts of the country and that the government has already allocated funds for major rehabilitation.<\/p>\n

She added that apart from the assessment, the government has already increased the budget for emergency rehabilitation of roads from 21bn\/- to 131bn\/-.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe budget for the rehabilitation of all damaged roads has already been allocated, therefore, I would like to ask all MPs to understand that the government is working hard to address the problem, \u201c she said.<\/p>\n
