AfricaPress-Tanzania:<\/strong> WHEREAS\u00a0 last Tuesday was no special day\u00a0 as it doesn\u2019t bear commemorative status like, for instance, Independence\u00a0 and Union Day, it was nonetheless\u00a0 special within the context of the General Election slated for the coming October, for which the Tanzanian electorate is gearing up.<\/p>\n

Beyond the electorate at home, though, the day is significant because it hosted, so to speak, a process that focused on an individual who has a critical bearing on that election.\u00a0 That person is President John Pombe Magufuli, and the process in question\u00a0 being his\u00a0 submission of\u00a0 nomination forms\u00a0 from individuals who are supporting his presidential candidacy under the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) ticket, to the party\u2019s secretariat.<\/p>\n

In essence, therefore, Dr Magufuli may now be characterised alternately as CCM Presidential Candidate, since, Come Election Day,\u00a0 he will be in contention for the top seat alongside candidates fielded by other political parties.<\/p>\n

Back to Tuesday\u2019s event, it is significant that the aspirant\u2019s candidature\u00a0 garnered the endorsement of over one million people, a testimony to the\u00a0 widespread\u00a0 support base that he commands.<\/p>\n

Similarly significant, however, are the sentiments that he expressed at the event, giving a deeper insight amongst his compatriots as well as people beyond the Land of Kilimanjaro, of the psyche of the incumbent national leader.<\/p>\n

He said\u00a0 he chose to seek an additional five-year tenure in order to supervise the pending phases of\u00a0 crucial developments.<\/p>\n

The candidate was candid in his sentiments,\u00a0 stressing that,\u00a0 he was anxious to\u00a0 monitor and supervise implementation of gigantic projects like the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), Julius Nyerere Hydro Power as well as Tanga-Hoima pipeline.<\/p>\n

At this juncture, it is worth chipping in Dr Magufuli\u2019s absolute rejection of\u00a0 proposals for an extension of presidential term\u00a0 limits, driven by the popularity that he has generated amongst his compatriots.<\/p>\n

Inherent in the rejection is the obvious fact that, Dr Magufuli, whose popularity would have assured him of consistent\u00a0 popular electoral mandate, loathes any\u00a0 presumptions that there aren\u2019t any other individuals amongst the crop of current politicians, who are presidential material.<\/p>\n

To his credit, too, is the realisation that presidential business is most emotionally and intellectually taxing business\u00a0 from the post\u2019s holder needs a break.<\/p>\n

This contrasts sharply elsewhere, within and beyond Tanzania, whereby some individuals are maniacal political power mongers!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
