Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>The United States has issued a fresh security alert for its citizens in Tanzania, warning of a continued heavy security presence and curfews in some parts of the country.<\/p>\n

In its latest advisory, the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania said that \u201cafter days of civil unrest, the curfew was lifted in Dar es Salaam.<\/p>\n

“Other areas of the country may still be subject to curfew.”<\/p>\n

The embassy noted that a \u201cheavy security presence persists nationwide,\u201d with \u201cmovement restrictions and security checkpoints\u201d continuing in many locations.<\/p>\n

It also warned that \u201cforeign nationals may experience increased attention from local security authorities, and there have been reports of temporary detentions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cZanzibar is reported to be calm, and shops and ferries are operating normally,” read the alert.<\/p>\n

Police have reminded the public that \u201cunder Tanzanian law, the sharing of pictures or videos which cause panic is a criminal offence.\u201d<\/p>\n

The embassy added that \u201cthere are reports of security searching electronic devices for politically sensitive content.\u201d<\/p>\n

It also highlighted \u201cintermittent internet outages,\u201d with \u201ccertain apps reportedly blocked.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement said \u201cthe ability to make payments via credit card is dependent on internet access,\u201d though more locations can now accept card payments as access improves.<\/p>\n

According to the advisory, stores of \u201cfood, fuel, and cash are still low in certain areas.\u201d<\/p>\n

It also advised travellers to confirm flights by phone before heading to airports, noting that \u201cinternational airports are operational.\u201d<\/p>\n

The embassy urged U.S. citizens to \u201cavoid demonstrations,\u201d \u201cavoid crowds,\u201d \u201ckeep a low profile,\u201d \u201cmonitor local media for updates,\u201d and \u201cbe aware of your surroundings.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. citizens seeking assistance were directed to contact the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam or the State Department\u2019s Bureau of Consular Affairs.<\/p>\n

One day ago, Tanzanian police lifted a night-time curfew imposed since last Wednesday in the main city, Dar es Salaam, following deadly election protests, as life slowly returns to normal across the country.<\/p>\n

Following the unrest, the internet was cut nationwide, and most shops in Dar es Salaam closed amid acute shortages of basic essentials and soaring prices. Schools shut and public transport came to a halt.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, some shops reopened and traffic resumed, but with queues persisting at some petrol stations in Dar es Salaam.<\/p>\n

President Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in on Monday after being declared the winner of last Wednesday\u2019s election with 98% of the vote.<\/p>\n

Samia first came into office in 2021 as Tanzania\u2019s first female president following the death of President John Magufuli.<\/p>\n
