Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong> <\/span>THE Mainland Premier League took a significant detour yesterday as heavyweights Simba SC and Azam FC both stumbled to goalless stalemates, handing a massive advantage to league leaders Young Africans.<\/p>\n

In Arusha, Simba SC failed to capitalise on a late man-advantage against a resilient TRA United, while Azam FC\u2019s clinical edge deserted them in a gritty encounter with Mbeya City at the Tanzanite Kwara Stadium.<\/p>\n

For Simba, the 0-0 draw at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Memorial Stadium marks their second consecutive away stalemate leaving the Msimbazi giants in second place with 36 points from 17 matches\u2014trailing \u201cYanga\u201d by eight points.<\/p>\n

While Simba hold a game in hand, the widening gap puts immense pressure on their upcoming fixtures.<\/p>\n

TRA United, transformed from the side that collapsed in a 3-0 defeat to Simba just two weeks ago, were the aggressors for much of the first half where they enjoyed better possession and appeared more composed.<\/p>\n

They nearly made a bright start as early as the second minute when Ramadhani Salum broke down the right flank and delivered a cross into the box.<\/p>\n

Enock Jiah found himself unmarked but failed to convert the opportunity, sending his effort off target. The hosts believed they had taken the lead in the 28th minute when Valentin Nouma struck a low free-kick into the net.<\/p>\n

However, the goal was disallowed for offside after Nassry Kombo was adjudged to have obstructed Simba goalkeeper Mahamadou Kassali\u2019s line of sight while in an offside position.<\/p>\n

The home side continued to press, and in the 34th minute, Salum once again provided a cross that found Ally Ng\u2019anzi, whose header drifted off target.<\/p>\n

Simba gradually grew into the match and came closest in the first half when Selemani Mwalimu struck the woodwork. After the interval, the visitors showed greater urgency in attack.<\/p>\n

In the 69th minute, Clatous Chama delivered a cross that was headed into the path of Yusuph Kagoma, but his effort was cleared by TRA United goalkeeper Jean Noel.<\/p>\n

TRA United responded with a swift counter-attack as Ng\u2019anzi advanced down the left flank and picked out Salum, but Simba\u2019s defence reacted in time to clear the danger.<\/p>\n

As the match approached its closing stages, Mwalimu had another opportunity in the 82nd minute when he unleashed a volley, but the effort was comfortably dealt with by the TRA United goalkeeper.<\/p>\n

Late drama unfolded when Nouma was shown a second yellow card following a series of fouls, reducing TRA United to ten men.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the hosts remained resolute in the closing minutes to secure a valuable point against the title contenders.<\/p>\n

TRA United have shown mixed form in recent matches, having secured a 2-0 victory over Singida Black Stars on Sunday, suffered a 3-0 defeat to Simba SC on March 22, played out a goalless draw against Young Africans on March 18, and recorded a 2-0 win over Namungo FC on March 11.<\/p>\n

In Manyara, Azam FC\u2019s pursuit of the summit was blunted by a disciplined Mbeya City. The 0-0 result was Azam\u2019s 10th draw of the campaign\u2014a statistic that continues to haunt their title credentials.<\/p>\n

Now sitting third with 34 points, Azam find themselves losing touch with the leading pack as the season enters its business end.<\/p>\n
