Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong> <\/span>CCM Vice-Chairman for Tanzania Mainland, Mr Stephen Wasira, has urged Tanzanians, especially the younger generation, to preserve and promote the legacy and philosophy of the late Father of the Nation, Julius Nyerere, saying his principles remain vital to national development.<\/p>\n

Speaking during a commemorative forum marking Nyerere\u2019s birth anniversary in Dar es Salaam today, April 10, 2026, Wasira said the late leader\u2019s vision was anchored on national unity, African liberation, and building a cohesive, independent nation.<\/p>\n

He noted that since the founding of TANU in 1954, Nyerere laid a strong foundation of unity that enabled Tanzanians to unite in the struggle for independence.<\/p>\n

Additionally, he said that Nyerere also championed women\u2019s rights, stressing gender equality at a time when societal norms marginalised women.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe made it clear that women are not inferior and must be given equal opportunities in society,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Despite resistance from colonial authorities, Wasira said, Nyerere remained firm in advocating justice, equality and democracy, including the push for universal suffrage without discrimination.<\/p>\n

He added that honouring Nyerere\u2019s legacy goes beyond remembrance, calling for sustained efforts to uphold the values of unity, patriotism, and ethical leadership he exemplified.<\/p>\n

Wasira further said the founding president is remembered for defending the rights of the underprivileged and promoting social equity throughout his leadership.<\/p>\n

He emphasised that Nyerere\u2019s approach to leadership prioritised the welfare of ordinary citizens, ensuring fairness and equal opportunity regardless of economic or social status.<\/p>\n

According to Wasira, the late leader believed meaningful development could only be achieved through justice for all, a principle that shaped policies aimed at uplifting low-income communities under the doctrine of Ujamaa and self-reliance.<\/p>\n

He said Nyerere consistently opposed exploitation, discrimination, and social divisions, while fostering national cohesion and a strong sense of human dignity among Tanzanians.<\/p>\n

Julius Nyerere, the first President of Tanzania, is celebrated for his role in the country’s independence and his vision of a united, self-reliant nation. He founded the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) in 1954, which played a crucial role in the struggle against colonial rule.
