The Tanzanian government is advancing Phase II of the National ID System Expansion Project, which includes constructing a new headquarters in Dodoma and registration offices across 31 districts, including Micheweni. Deputy Minister Ayoub Mohamed Mahmoud provided updates in the National Assembly, highlighting the project’s progress and funding details.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong> <\/span>THE government is implementing Phase II of the National ID System Expansion Project which includes the construction of the headquarters building in Dodoma, an ICT equipment maintenance centre, and registration offices in 31 districts, including Micheweni.<\/p>\n

Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Ayoub Mohamed Mahmoud said this in the National Assembly when he was reacting to Wingu lawmaker Omari Issa Kombo who wanted the government to explain the current status of the construction of the National Identification Authority (NIDA) office at Micheweni District Headquarters.<\/p>\n

In his response, the Deputy Minister said the Authority has completed the design of building plans and ICT infrastructure and is currently undertaking procedures to procure a contractor for the construction works.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tender for the contractor has already been announced and procurement processes are ongoing,\u201d Mahmoud informed the lawmakers.<\/p>\n

As of March 2026, he added, the government, through NIDA, had already completed the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as well as a Geotechnical Investigation of the site to ensure that the design and construction of the office consider environmental and soil conditions.<\/p>\n

He also added that compensation has been paid to residents of Micheweni District who were previously using the area to pave the way for construction.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr Speaker, following the completion of Phase I of the National Identification Project\u2014which involved the construction of a Data Centre, a Disaster Recovery Centre and registration offices in 13 districts\u2014the government is now implementing Phase II of the National ID System Expansion Project,\u201d the deputy minister told the House.<\/p>\n

Elaborating, he noted this phase includes the construction of the headquarters building in the capital city.<\/p>\n

According to him, the project will also enhance and strengthen the registration and identification system by introducing additional verification methods using iris and facial recognition technologies to ensure more reliable biometric identification. In his additional question, the MP asked the Deputy Minister to tell the house the amount of funds allocated to implement the project in Micheweni District.<\/p>\n

Responding, Mr Mahmoud said the project has been receiving funds in phases adding that a total of 33bn\/- was released during the 2025\/26 financial year for the ongoing construction of the NIDA office in Micheweni. He promised that the assessment of implementation of the project will be released later.<\/p>\n

The National Identification Authority (NIDA) was established to enhance national security and streamline identification processes in Tanzania. The first phase of the National ID System focused on creating essential infrastructure, including a Data Centre and registration offices in 13 districts. With the implementation of Phase II, the government aims to improve biometric identification methods, incorporating advanced technologies such as iris and facial recognition to ensure accuracy and reliability in citizen identification.<\/p>\n
