The Institute of Tax Administration (ITA) is collaborating with customs, tax, and education stakeholders to design a master’s degree in customs. This initiative aims to address the skills shortage in Tanzania’s labor market, ensuring graduates meet industry demands. The program will involve consultations to define necessary competencies and align the curriculum with national and international best<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong> <\/span>THE Institute of Tax Administration (ITA) has convened key players from the customs, tax and education sectors to fast-track the design of a master\u2019s degree in customs, in a bold move to tackle a growing shortage of highly skilled professionals in Tanzania and beyond.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the high-level consultative forum in the city, ITA Principle, Prof Isaya Jairo said the initiative is a direct response to long-standing concerns that graduates are not adequately prepared for the demands of the labour market.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have heard the outcry for years graduates are not meeting industry needs. That is why we are bringing stakeholders to the table first, to define what competencies are required before we even draft the curriculum,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He explained that the process will involve extensive consultations, where stakeholders will help shape the programme content, followed by a validation phase to ensure the proposed curriculum aligns with both national and international standards.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the first forum of its kind a platform to gather input before developing the actual curriculum. Once we prepare a draft, we will bring stakeholders back again for verification,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Mr Isaya noted that the proposed master\u2019s programme will be the first of its kind in Tanzania and is expected to significantly strengthen the country\u2019s capacity in customs management, trade facilitation and revenue collection.<\/p>\n

Stakeholders attending the forum welcomed the move, describing it as timely and strategic.<\/p>\n

Mr Kisamo Bakari from the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) and Mr Mwihimari Said from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) said the programme will enhance efficiency and productivity within the customs sector.<\/p>\n

They stressed that developing specialised expertise will not only improve service delivery but also boost Tanzania\u2019s competitiveness in regional and international trade.<\/p>\n

The initiative comes at a time when the country is seeking to modernise its customs systems and position itself as a key trade hub in East Africa.<\/p>\n

Tanzania has faced challenges in developing a skilled workforce, particularly in specialized fields like customs and taxation. The need for a master’s degree in customs arises from the increasing complexity of global trade and the necessity for professionals who can navigate these challenges effectively. By engaging stakeholders, ITA aims to create a curriculum that not only meets local needs but also aligns with international standards, enhancing Tanzania’s position in the regional trade landscape. This initiative reflects a broader trend in education reform aimed at bridging the gap between academic training and industry requirements.<\/p>\n
