AfricaPress-Tanzania:<\/strong> Chief Medical\u00a0 Officer ( CMO) \u00a0Prof\u00a0 Abel\u00a0 Makubi \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

THE government has cautioned the public over increasing cases of Non Communicable Diseases (NDCs) in the country, calling upon the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) to direct more efforts in the area to reduce the burden on government and individual citizens.<\/p>\n

Chief Medical\u00a0 Officer ( CMO) \u00a0Prof\u00a0 Abel\u00a0 Makubi \u00a0said that\u00a0 although NIMR\u00a0\u00a0had embarked on\u00a0 national survey\u00a0 on the diseases, it\u00a0 should\u00a0\u00a0 focus\u00a0 more in the area\u00a0 to avoid posing \u00a0additional\u00a0 burden to\u00a0 the government.<\/p>\n

The CMO made the remark on Friday at the launch of NIMR\u00a040th\u00a0commemoration events held in Dar es Salaam.<\/p>\n

He said that NDCs are on the rise thus they should be given priority because they have started to affect young generation.<\/p>\n

Prof Makubi cited hypertension saying that the disease is also affecting youth who also develop more complications earlier such as kidney diseases and stroke.<\/p>\n

Other diseases include diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.<\/p>\n

He added that the fight against NCDs also require behavior change thus there was a need of involving the society in order to win the war.<\/p>\n

“We are\u00a0 all aware\u00a0 that NCDs are on the rise … the ministry\u00a0 is aware\u00a0 of the\u00a0 contribution\u00a0 by NIMR\u00a0 in the area\u00a0 through its research\u00a0 which have helped\u00a0 to identify the magnitude of the problem\u00a0 in the country\u00a0 and\u00a0 risk factors,” he said.<\/p>\n

He added that the survey has helped in establishment of Non Communicable Diseases program which gave priority in the area.<\/p>\n

NIMR Director General Prof Yunus Mgaya said NIMR\u00a0 has\u00a0 recorded tremendous achievements in health research over\u00a0 the last\u00a0 40 years of\u00a0 its existence\u00a0 including\u00a0 government response\u00a0 to\u00a0 Non Communicable\u00a0 Diseases\u00a0 (NDC)\u00a0 which\u00a0 have\u00a0 become\u00a0 a growing\u00a0 health\u00a0 threat\u00a0 globally<\/p>\n

He said that the national survey carried out by NIMR on NCDs helped to highlight the burden of the diseases\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 including diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases risk factors.<\/p>\n

“The results of the study helped to inform the NCD strategic plan 2016\/2020 and other government efforts to respond to NCD burden,” he said.<\/p>\n

He noted that other on- going\u00a0 NCD- related studies\u00a0 include\u00a0 the H3A diabetes\u00a0 study\u00a0 which\u00a0 document\u00a0 the prevalence and environmental and genetic\u00a0 determinant of type 2\u00a0 diabetes\u00a0 in Sub Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n

“This study will fill the knowledge gap of the causes or reasons for acquiring\u00a0 diabetes\u00a0 especially\u00a0 in Sub- Sharan\u00a0 Africa… this will guarantee much-needed evidence\u00a0 on the\u00a0 types and subtypes\u00a0 of diabetes\u00a0 and generate evidence\u00a0 of specific\u00a0 drivers of\u00a0 diabetes,” Prof Mgaya\u00a0 said.<\/p>\n

He said that\u00a0 some\u00a0 other\u00a0 major achievements\u00a0 in research\u00a0 that had\u00a0 implications\u00a0 to policy\u00a0 and practice include studies\u00a0 on anti-malarial conducted at\u00a0 NIMR\u00a0 Amani and Tanga\u00a0 centres\u00a0 which contributed to the change of\u00a0 treatment of malaria from chloroquine to sulphadoxine – pyrimethamine( SP)\u00a0 and from SP\u00a0 to Artemether\u00a0 Combination Therapy ( ACT).<\/p>\n

“This has resulted\u00a0 in improving malaria\u00a0 case management and ultimately reducing\u00a0 morbidity\u00a0 and mortality\u00a0 in Tanzania,” Prof Mgaya\u00a0 added.<\/p>\n

He further said that NIMR also contributed to\u00a0 improvements in HIV diagnosis and treatment\u00a0 through its study\u00a0 on reduction of early\u00a0 mortality among HIV-infected subjects\u00a0 starting\u00a0 antiretroviral therapy known as REMSTART\u00a0 trial.<\/p>\n

Prof Mgaya said that the study \u00a0\u00a0revealed a new approach to manage patients with advanced HIV in Tanzania and Zambia.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0 further\u00a0 said that\u00a0 NIMR\u00a0 Muhimbili centre\u00a0 also in collaboration with\u00a0 National\u00a0 Tuberculosis\u00a0 and Leprosy\u00a0 Control Programme\u00a0 has contributed\u00a0 to improved\u00a0 quality\u00a0 of the Central\u00a0 Tuberculosis\u00a0 Reference\u00a0 Laboratory\u00a0 and other\u00a0 TB\u00a0 laboratories\u00a0 in the country.<\/p>\n

Prof Mgaya\u00a0 however said that\u00a0 in commemorating 40 \u2013 year\u00a0 milestone\u00a0 NIMR\u00a0 has\u00a0 planned a series of activities\u00a0 during the month of\u00a0 November to December\u00a0 this year which will be\u00a0\u00a0 held at all NIMR centres and headquarters\u00a0 in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
