{"id":18385,"date":"2020-11-11T19:56:35","date_gmt":"2020-11-11T19:56:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/tanzania\/?p=18385"},"modified":"2020-11-11T19:56:35","modified_gmt":"2020-11-11T19:56:35","slug":"scientists-urged-to-research-on-ncds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/tanzania\/community\/scientists-urged-to-research-on-ncds","title":{"rendered":"SCIENTISTS URGED TO RESEARCH ON NCDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Author: LYDIA SHEKIGHENDA<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>AfricaPress-Tanzania:<\/strong> SCIENTISTS in the country have been implored to conduct scientific studies on Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) to provide solutions for the ailments, including prevention and new treatment strategies.<\/p>\n<p>NCDs accounted for 33 per cent of all deaths in the country in 2017 of which a total of 134,600 deaths related to the chronic diseases, according to the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Prof Abel Makubi said in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday during the\u00a0second National Non Communicable Diseases Scientific Conference that the deaths were mainly\u00a0caused by blood pressure 13 per cent, diabetes 2 per cent, cancer 7 per cent\u00a0and accidents 11 per cent .<\/p>\n<p>According to the World Health Organization (WHO), NCDs accounted for 41 million deaths annually which is equivalent to 71 per cent of all fatalities occurred in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Makubi said research institutions and health facilities should direct more efforts in service provision and conduct scientific research to enable citizens to prevent themselves from the\u00a0diseases and provide new treatment strategies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;NCDs contribute more than three quarter of global deaths which could be prevented if the ailments were detected earlier while posing a high burden on middle income countries<\/p>\n<p>Lives are cut short by\u00a0NCDs\u00a0including heart diseases,\u00a0diabetes,\u00a0cancer, sickle cell, accident and\u00a0kidney diseases, mental illness, illicit drugs\u00a0and other related chronic diseases,&#8221; Prof Makubi said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the diseases have caused a huge loss to the nation\u00a0by reducing manpower, posing burden on government and individual citizens by creating dependence and high burden\u00a0 in health\u00a0 systems,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Makubi commended scientists who presented various writings to provide scientific evidence on the magnitude of the problem as efforts towards prevention and control of the diseases<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all witnessed the situation in the past ten years&#8230;the government has improved infrastructure\u00a0 and purchased\u00a0 medical equipment which\u00a0 enable scientists to\u00a0 do their work smoothly,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Muhimbili University of health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) Vice Chancellor Prof. Andrea Pembe said that one of the responsibilities of his institution is to conduct research with the purpose of addressing challenges in the health sector.<\/p>\n<p>He pledged to work together with the ministry of health in strengthening preventive measures, treatment and address challenges related to NCDs and other health issues.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Appolinary Kamuhabwa who is the chairman\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 preparatory committee\u00a0 said\u00a0 more than 200\u00a0 scientific research\u00a0 will be presented \u00a0 during the symposium which attracts\u00a0 over 500 participants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Author: LYDIA SHEKIGHENDA AfricaPress-Tanzania: SCIENTISTS in the country have been implored to conduct scientific studies on Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) to provide solutions for the ailments, including prevention and new treatment strategies.
