AfricaPress-Tanzania:<\/strong> PREVENTION and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in Dodoma has said it intends to intensify the fight against corruption after residents reported to them cases relayed to corrupt practices.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to investigate the corruption cases reported to us and take legal action against the culprits,\u201d said Dodoma Regional PCCB Commander Sosthenes Kibwengo recently.<\/p>\n

He said they had 178 cases reported to them, 23 per cent of the cases levelled against local authorities, 20 per cent against private credit facilities, 14 per cent against land officers, 6 per cent related to the October general election, 6 per cent related to health and 6 per cent against the police.<\/p>\n

Briefing reporters on PCCB\u2019s performance for 2020, the PCCB regional chief said the fight against corruption was everyone\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\n

He insisted that the willingness of the public to support the fight had helped recover 283.9m\/-, 14 plots and a five-acre farm.<\/p>\n

Mr Kibwengo said a large part of the money was recovered from private credit facilities, as well as individuals, who had been operating against governing financial service rules and regulations.<\/p>\n

For instance, the commander said PCCB recovered 400 automated teller machine cards, which were in the custody of Geneva Credit Shop of Kondoa District.<\/p>\n

He said PCCB had received 30 cases from various individuals, accusing the firm of insubordination.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn one of the cases we have,\u201d he said, \u201cit involves a person who applied for a 350,000\/- loan.\u201d \u201cThe victim paid 4.6m\/- , but the company required him to pay an extra 35m\/-.\u00a0This is unacceptable,\u201d he said, adding that it all happened after the borrower applied for his retirement benefits.<\/p>\n

According to Mr Kibwego, the company has been operating in the district for 25 years, but it was formalised in 2016, having exploited hundreds of borrowers.<\/p>\n

He urged members of the public not to be silenced so that they could recover what was due to them.<\/p>\n

In another development, PCCB will today arraign Severo Mtegeki (42), who is Dodoma Urban Water and Sewerage Supply Authority (Duwasa) assistant accountant and is suspected of misreporting bill accounts in 2015, which occasioned Duwasa a loss of 428.1m\/-.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
