AfricaPress-Tanzania:<\/strong> VICE -President Ms Samia Suluhu Hassan has called upon forest and honeybee stakeholders to devise a strategy for promoting the sector\u2019s products, to allow it to significantly contribute to the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n

The VP said that currently, forest and honeybee contribute 3.5 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 5.9 per cent of export income.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should come up with the strategy\u00a0 for promoting these products to expand our market\u00a0 hence increase contribution of this sector to the national income,\u201d the VP said in her speech read by the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Dr Damas Ndumbaro.<\/p>\n

Dr Ndumbaro represented Ms Samia in an International Scientific Conference on Forrest and Honeybee Products Value Chain for sustainable Livelihoods and Industrial Economy held in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have varieties of\u00a0 forest and honeybee\u00a0 products\u00a0 but we\u00a0 lack the strategy\u00a0 of promoting them \u2026 there is no doubt\u00a0 that we\u00a0 produce\u00a0 sufficient honey \u00a0 which is also being sold\u00a0 to the international market \u2026 we should\u00a0 promote the products\u00a0 to\u00a0 expand our\u00a0 market,\u201d the VP stressed.<\/p>\n

She said that in order to realise the plan they should first improve production in terms of quantity and quality, address the gaps in the value chain and identify the market needs.<\/p>\n

Ms Samia also stressed the need for increasing the number of factories for processing forest and honeybee products using raw materials available \u00a0 in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo far the country has 21 factories for processing honeybee products although the government\u00a0 is working to increase\u00a0 five factories in Mlele, Kibondo, Bukombe, Nzega and Sikonge\u00a0 therefore\u00a0 there will be 26 factories \u2026they are not enough we are supposed to have\u00a0 at least 200 factories\u00a0 countrywide,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

On forest processing factories, she said there are 4200 factories in the country \u00a0 noting that they need to improve their efficiency.<\/p>\n

She however, noted that the factories have helped a lot to reduce importation of forest products and increase exports.<\/p>\n

She noted that in 2015 the country\u00a0 imported\u00a0 90 cubic metres of\u00a0 wood\u00a0 products\u00a0 but in 2020\u00a0 the imports\u00a0 dropped\u00a0 to 20 cubic metres\u2026\u201d this has\u00a0 been possible because \u00a0 the country\u00a0 is now\u00a0 emphasizing on using\u00a0 locally manufactured products.\u201d<\/p>\n

For his part, Tanzania Forestry Research Institute Acting Director General Dr Revocatus\u00a0 Mushumbusi said that\u00a0 the three day\u00a0 conference\u00a0 has been organised by Forestry and Value Chains Development programme (FORVAC<\/em>)\u00a0 in cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and Tanzania Forestry Research Institute (TAFORI) .<\/p>\n

He said\u00a0the conference provides a platform for sharing knowledge and promotes discussions on how to develop forest and honeybee products value chains for transforming the nation into a middle-income country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
