AfricaPress-Tanzania:<\/strong> the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania\u00a0(ELCT)\u00a0Presiding Bishop Dr Fredrick O. Shoo\u00a0has\u00a0issued a\u00a0statement\u00a0encouraging\u00a0local\u00a0church leaders\u00a0to fully participate in educating\u00a0the church and\u00a0communities\u00a0on\u00a0necessary\u00a0precautions\u00a0to\u00a0curb\u00a0the\u00a0spread of\u00a0the\u00a0Coronavirus (COVID-19)\u00a0pandemic in the country.\u00a0The bishop urged people to follow the instructions of health care specialists in order to stay safe.<\/p>\n

Referencing Hosea 4:6 \u201cIn order that they do not perish,\u201d\u00a0the\u00a0presiding\u00a0bishop wrote\u00a0that\u00a0\u201cthe virus has\u00a0completely\u00a0changed our way of living in Tanzania and worldwide, hence it is vital that we take precautions\u201d\u00a0and educate the people.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Tanzanian church\u00a0has\u00a0already\u00a0taken\u00a0several steps\u00a0to\u00a0ensure\u00a0health\u00a0and\u00a0safety. This includes\u00a0reducing the number of meetings and safaris and putting in place measures to protect\u00a0Sunday school children from the pandemic.\u00a0Health care advice, such as wearing masks, physical distancing and hand-washing, is also followed\u00a0rigorously.<\/p>\n

Emphasizing\u00a0education\u00a0as a key component in preventing infection Shoo wrote,\u00a0\u201cthose who have been given\u00a0the\u00a0mandate\u00a0by God\u00a0to shepherd and lead the people of God,\u201d\u00a0have a responsibility to\u00a0\u201censure\u00a0the people of God get enough knowledge on how to combat the virus.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTanzania is not a country outside the world,\u201d\u00a0the bishop wrote\u00a0and asked church leaders to come together during the pandemic and help people in taking all necessary actions\u00a0to\u00a0protect themselves from contracting the virus, which will\u00a0stop the spread.<\/p>\n

Bishop Shoo added that to take precautions\u00a0is an act of accountability. \u201cIt is not against faith,\u00a0it is\u00a0not a sin,\u00a0and\u00a0it is\u00a0not a crime\u00a0to protect oneself from the virus,\u201d\u00a0wrote Shoo\u00a0adding that\u00a0“and\u00a0not taking precautions\u201d would be like\u00a0\u201ctrying God\u00a0over the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
