I couldn\u2019t take my family and I haven\u2019t seen them since I left my country,\u201d recalls Lazaro Godwin, a councillor who served Mkomo ward from 2010 to 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Their plight is clearly demonstrated by rising cases of people being arrested and locked in by police officers for questioning President John Pombe Magufuli\u2019s whereabouts for the last few days before the government announced his death yesterday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-article-page-desktop my-2\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1498022554617-0\" data-google-query-id=\"COLH19mauu8CFUzb3godb4oBRQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/24409412\/home_main_inner_middle_advert1_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.standardmedia.co.ke\/images\/thursday\/bclsivwdgz9nqz6053626eb5a3d.jpg\" \/><figcaption><strong>The fifth President of the United Republic of Tanzania the late John Pombe Magufuli.<\/strong> \u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For three weeks now,\u00a0Magufuli had skipped\u00a0his customary almost daily appearance in public after speculations arose over his health and capacity to lead the country. However, such claims can be made anywhere in the world except in Tanzania.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice cells are full of people just because they are asking about the president\u2019s health. That\u2019s why you can\u2019t see anything in Tanzanian media,\u201d said Godwin. Ngai Kagose remembers how they were attacked by police and members of Chama cha Mapinduzi while holding a meeting and one of their colleagues Nyatega Wenje was killed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to run and days later hide inside a truck ferrying cattle to Suba Kuria to get to Kenya.
