AfricaPress-Tanzania:<\/strong> TRAFFIC police officers have been asked to use wisdom when charging penalties to motorists instead of using force to punish people who contravene the law.<\/p>\n

The call was made here by the Minister of Home Affairs, George Simbachawene, when responding to questions from Arusha Urban MP, Mrisho Gambo (CCM) and Makete MP Festo Sanga (CCM) respectively, who had raised their concerns over unnecessary penalties issued by traffic police officers on road users who contravene the law.<\/p>\n

According to the MPs, some police officers were slapping penalties to motorists of up to 200,000\/-, something which made it difficult to clear their debts. They also wanted the 30,000\/- fine which ought to be charged to all motorists to be reduced for bodaboda riders because they carry only one passenger as opposed to commuter busses.<\/p>\n

However, Mr Simbachawene asked police officers to use wisdom when enforcing the law, at the same time asking road users to equally abide by the law.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of us should be responsible when using the roads, but also police officers need to observe sobriety and wisdom when dealing with rougue drivers,\u2019\u2019 he insisted.<\/p>\n

Regarding reduction of the fine on bodaboda riders, Deputy Minister in the Ministry, Hamza Khamis Chiro said the government had no plans whatsoever to reduce the penalty because more incidents of contravening the law were increasing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
