Africa-Press<\/a> – Tanzania<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) has said the bright future lies ahead for the youth and farmers on account of their scholarship programme that fund tens of students every year from humble background to pursue agricultural studies in local colleges.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s Managing Director, Mr Mark Ocitti said since its inception last year, SBL\u2019s Kilimo-Viwanda Scholarship had already enabled a total of 71 students to pursue diploma level agricultural studies in four local colleges.<\/p>\n

Mr Ocitti made the remarks at a ceremony to award 17 students St Maria Goretti Agriculture Training Institute with the scholarships.<\/p>\n

The programme supports bright students from low-income families to study pursue agri-related diploma courses in local colleges.<\/p>\n

The other 43 students under the programme are studying at Kaole Wazazi College of Agriculture (Bagamoyo), Kilacha Agriculture and Livestock Training Institute (Moshi) and Igabiro Training Institute of Agriculture (Bukoba).<\/p>\n

The scholarship covers school fees and other academic-related expenses for the student\u2019s entire period of study.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the Kilimo-Viwanda programme is focused to compliment the government\u2019s effort to strengthen the existing pool of agricultural experts in the country.<\/p>\n

The programme, according to the MD, is set to spur development of the country\u2019s agriculture by enriching the existing pool of experts needed to support farmers improve in the field.<\/p>\n

SBL is heavily dependent on local cereals including maize, sorghum and barley for brewing its beers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough programme, students get an opportunity to enhance their experience through field learning in the farms and through visits to SBL breweries located in Dar es Salaam, Moshi and Mwanza they get to appreciate the interdependence between farming and processing\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Principal of the St. Maria Goretti Agriculture Training Institute, Isaya Marcus Kigava, applauded SBL\u2019s appealing record to support the college students in their quest for a better future.<\/p>\n

\u201cSBL has been remarkable to ensure our youth acquire critical knowledge to jump-start into successful agri-business in the nearest future,\u201dKigava said.<\/p>\n

Last year the company sourced 17,000 tonnes of local cereals from a network of 400 farmers found across the country and was keen to increase sourcing locally up to 85 per cent by 2025, offering more market opportunity to local farmers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
