Africa-Press<\/a> – Tanzania<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>PEOPLE living near coastal areas have been urged to consider appropriate and sustainable use of marine resources for long term benefits.<\/p>\n

This advice was made over the weekend by Zanzibar Chief Justice Omar Othman Makungu, insisting that it was important for people who are using the sea as a source of income to be vigilant in conserving marine resources.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince you need to continue benefiting from the marine resources including fish catch for your living, and also you have to support the government\u2019s blue economy policy, you only need to conserve the marine,\u201d Makungu noted.<\/p>\n

He made the call at the opening of the \u2018Ramadhan Holy month public symposium on the blue economy\u2019 held at Mahonda area, Unguja North, where he said that some communities and people were still carrying out destructive activities without considering the importance of marine resources to them.<\/p>\n

Mr Makungu commended \u2018Zanzibar Relief And Development Foundation (ZARDEFO)\u2019 for the timely symposium that shows support to the government efforts in promoting a blue economy that would create many economic opportunities. The Regional Commissioner (RC) for Unguja North region, Mr Ayoub Mohammed Mahmoud, said the symposium aimed at giving people opportunity to understand and discuss blue economy and how they can contribute.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need everyone to get involved in the blue economy and learn how best she\/he can contribute to realization,\u201d the RC said.<\/p>\n

Unguja North is the leading region with tourists\u2019 hotels, fishing activities, and water sports. ZARDEFO SecretaryMr Ali Mohammed Haji said his office had organized the symposium to help people understand the link between religion and marine resources at this time when the focus is on the blue economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2018Blue Economy\u2019 is an emerging concept which encourages better stewardship of our ocean or \u2018blue\u2019 resources. It supports all of the United Nations\u2019 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG14 \u2018life below water\u2019, and recognises that this will require ambitious, co-ordinated actions to sustainably manage, protect and preserve our ocean now, for the sake of present and future generations,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
