Sheikh Mruma said that staying in custody for a long time without trial denies them the right to timely access to justice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clerics relationship with Tanzania&#8217;s government<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2017 during the late President John Magufuli&#8217;s administration, the government threatened to revoke the registration of religious organisations that mix religion and politics, after some clerics criticised Magufuli&#8217;s leadership in their sermons. The warning was issued just days after the head of a Pentecostal church\u00a0 in Dar es Salaam criticised Magufuli&#8217;s administration, saying his government was closing democratic space.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29117\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/tanzania\/sites\/17\/2021\/05\/26-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"649\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/tanzania\/sites\/17\/2021\/05\/26-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/tanzania\/sites\/17\/2021\/05\/26-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/tanzania\/sites\/17\/2021\/05\/26.jpg 605w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 649px) 100vw, 649px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Imaam Ali Ahmed Sharif\u00a0 Muslim\u00a0leader in Dar es Salaam told Africa-Press that some leaders of religious societies through their sermons, they analysed political issues, which is contrary to the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The Citizen\u00a0reported that opponents accused Magufuli of increasingly undermining democracy by curbing dissent and stifling free speech.
