Africa-Press<\/a> – Tanzania<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>BANK of Tanzania (BoT) has given CRDB Bank a green light to open a subsidiary in DRC this year.<\/p>\n

The central bank approval finalised the bank\u2019s almost decade-long ambition to venture into a second foreign market.<\/p>\n

The bank first subsidiary was opened in Burundi almost a decade ago and the subsidiary took two years to break even.<\/p>\n

CRDB Chairman Dr Ally Laay said the central bank has already blessed the lender hence clearing the way to establish the subsidiary Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)\u2014preferably in Lubumbashi.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoT has cleared us to venture in Congo, this year, we are heading to DRC. We thank the central bank for the clearance and this year will go to Congo,\u201d Dr Laay told CRDB annual general meeting in Arusha last Saturday.<\/p>\n

CRDB Board three years ago approved the Group\u2019s entry into Congo to enable the lender to achieve its dream to become a regional powerhouse.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur ambition to become a regional powerhouse gain momentum this year, with preliminary engagements brings us a step closer to the dream,\u201d Dr Laay said.<\/p>\n

The AGM was attended by 700 shareholders visually while hundreds participated virtually in and outside the country.<\/p>\n

BoT Deputy Governor, Financial Stability and Deepening, Dr Bernard Kibesse said the central bank indeed issued the approval and communicated with the hosting regulator in DRC.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe BoT role was to facilitate the smooth passage of CRDB to Congo. \u201cThis also warranting the lender growth, since one cnot grow without investing outside as well,\u201d Dr Kibesse told \u2018Daily News\u2019 at the sideline of the AGM.<\/p>\n

Dr Kibesse said their counterpart in DRC will consult the Tanzania central bank to counter check CRDB\u2019s know your customer (KYC) information if they tally with the lender\u2019s presented report in Congo.<\/p>\n

\u201cNormally we communicate with the host regulator to make a smooth entry from one country to another,\u201d Dr Kibesse said.<\/p>\n

CRDB Group Managing Director and CEO Abdulmajid Nsekela said in the next AGM next year the bank will be already in DRC.<\/p>\n

\u201cNext AGM we want to report to you [shareholders] that we are now operating in Congo\u2026not we are planning,\u201d Mr Nsekela said.<\/p>\n

The CEO said their longterm aspiration is to build a future-ready bank that will lead the way in financial innovation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my perspective, a key differentiator for Group in 2021 will be our readiness to go beyond and explore opportunities in areas that remain unexploited,\u201d Mr Nsekela said.<\/p>\n

The Bank Chief Financial Officer, Mr Frederick Shekanabo, said the subsidiary businesses contributed a cumulative 9.0 per cent of overall Group profit last year, boosted by the Burundi subsidiary.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe notable performance of Burundi subsidiary is attributed to the strong growth in the top line income,\u201d Mr Nshekanabo said.<\/p>\n

The Burundi subsidiary grew by 75 per cent year on year to11.2bn\/-. Minister for Finance and Planning Mwigulu Nchemba challenged financial institutions to look beyond the country borders to maximize the country geographically.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
