Africa-Press<\/a> – Tanzania<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>THE Ministry of Agriculture has teamed up with private sector stakeholders to find out ways that will help Tanzania improve the quality of maize for export with special attention to the ever demanding Kenyan market.<\/p>\n

Minister of Agriculture Prof Adolph Mkenda, said that they have focused on Kenyan market because the largest economy in East Africa imports 600,000 metric tons of maize from different countries annually.<\/p>\n

“Tanzania’s current maize export to Kenya stands at 72,000 metric tonnes per year, which is equivalent to 70 per cent of total maize exported. There is a huge potential of increasing exports, Prof Mkenda said in a speech read on his behalf by Mr Honest Kessy, the Ministry’s Director of Food Safety.<\/p>\n

He was opening the private sector awareness forum on food quality and safety standards for maize, organized by Tanzania Private Sector foundation (TPSF).<\/p>\n

The Minister said that for Tanzania to benefit from such opportunities there was a need for addressing challenges like aflatoxin to make sure that they export quality maize with the required standards.<\/p>\n

Prof Mkenda added that, more efforts were needed to create awareness among maize farmers and traders on how best they can produce quality maize in order to increase exports.<\/p>\n

\u201cTanzania\u2019s Maize exports accounts for only 12 pc of the maize imported to Kenya, therefore, the remaining 88 pc is a potential opportunity. Farmers must be supported to produce quality and standard produce, while transporters and consumers are trained on how they can safely store maize to avoid any forms of contamination.<\/p>\n

For his part, the Executive Director of the Agricultural Council of Tanzania (ACT), Mr Timothy Mmbaga, said that in addition to quality, maize farmers in the country must be trained to increase productivity if they want to sell the produce at competitive prices.<\/p>\n

Mr Mmbaga said that if farmers are equipped with knowledge on how an acre can produce more quality and quantity maize, the country will have its exports price competitive.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a farmer produces productively per given land, it means that maize produced in the country will be sold at low price, hence increase competitiveness in both, local and international market,\u201d<\/p>\n

TPSF Executive Director Mr Francis Nanai said that the forum, aimed at coming up with strategies of how to conduct a campaign to educate farmers on how they can increase productivity and reduce aflatoxin to meet the required standards.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
