Africa-Press<\/a> – Tanzania<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>THE 23rd Sukuma Chief, Mr Ilango Kaphipa who died early this month will be laid to rest tomorrow (Saturday) at Watemi Cemetery in Misungwi District, his family has confirmed.<\/p>\n

The family spokesperson, Ms Magreth Joseph said that the deceased chief who ruled for 77 years through Bakumbi clan was suffering from asthma, which led to his death.<\/p>\n

“He died on July 2 this year at Bugando Referral Hospital, at the age of 93 years. During his lifetime, Chief Kaphipa stressed on love, solidarity and tolerance of which we should embrace as his legacy,” she said.<\/p>\n

The chairman of the Bakumbi clan, Mr Francis Kipondoya, stressed that the late chief, during his lifetime, managed to build unity and solidarity and love among the clan members and Sukuma people will continue to honour his legacy.<\/p>\n

According to Bakumbi clan rules and norms, the appointment of the new chief, commonly known as ‘Mtemi’ should take place before the burial of the late chief.<\/p>\n

“The appointment of the new chief will therefore take place today (Friday),” he said<\/p>\n

On her part, Lake Zone Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) Coordinator, Ms Glory Mihambo commented that the late chief Kaphipa was a great leader who played a key role in promoting cultural tourism.<\/p>\n

According to Ms Mihambo , the late tribal leader helped students and other people to know historical issues related to Sukuma tribe, traditions and customs.<\/p>\n
