Africa-Press<\/a> – Tanzania<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>ZANZIBAR Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Authority (ZAECA) has intercepted over 400m\/- that could have been lost in corrupt deals between July 2020 and June 2021. ZAECA Managing Director, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ahmed Khamis Makarani said here on Monday that during the period, the authority received 382 corruption related complaints.<\/p>\n

He further told reporters that the authority is investigating 280 cases, with 59 others closed due to lack of evidence, while 29 case files have been submitted to the Director of Public Prosecution for further decision.<\/p>\n

Most of the cases, he said, related to execution of multibillion projects like Zanzibar Urban Services Project (ZUSP), Ministry of Finance and Planning, the Treni house, Zanzibar Electricity Corporation, special departments, Masterlife and procurement of phantom fertilizer.<\/p>\n

In a speech read on his behalf by the authority\u2019s Anti Corruption Director Makame Khamis Hassan to commemorate the African Anti-corruption Day, ACP Makarani implored all islanders to actively participate in the fight against corruption.<\/p>\n

\u201cFighting corruption is not the responsibility of ZAECA alone; every citizen has a role to play. It\u2019s the responsibility of every mwananchi to accord zero-tolerance to all corrupt and economic sabotage practices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The anti-corruption chief charged that the authority relies on the support of every Zanzibar to succeed in the war against bribe and economic sabotage.<\/p>\n

He said ZAECA remains firmly determined to purge the social and economic vices in the country, saying through its sustainable public awareness raising strategies, the authority reached wananchi in 20 Shehias in Unguja and Pemba during the one-year period.<\/p>\n

The African Union through the African Convention on Preventing and Combating of Corruption (AUCPCC) declared the 2018 as the year of the fight against corruption in the African continent and dedicated July 11 as the anti corruption day annually.<\/p>\n
