Africa-Press<\/a> – Tanzania<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>JOURNALISTS in the country have been identified as key stakeholders in promoting and strengthening human rights, social accountability, gender equality, and ‘women’s leadership and political participation in the country.<\/p>\n

The remarks were made by facilitators of the media training on ‘Strengthening Women in Leadership Program (SWIL) project.<\/p>\n

The project aims at increasing the participation of women in democratic processes and leadership at all levels so that the group is regarded as active and vibrant actors in the democratic processes.<\/p>\n

The four- year project, which started last year, is being implemented by Tanzania Media Women Association (TAMWA)-Zanzibar in collaboration with Pemba Environment, Gender, and Advocacy Organization (PEGAO), and Zanzibar Female Lawyers Association (ZAFELA) with the support from Royal Norwegian Embassy in Dar es Salaam.<\/p>\n

Beneficiaries of the project include women, some civil society organisations and at least 60 journalists to improve writing skills \/produce analytical stories on the democratic process and women leadership, and also to strengthen ‘monitoring and evaluation system to facilitate tracking on women leadership and political rights.<\/p>\n

TAMWA-Zanzibar Director Dr Mzuri Issa and facilitators from the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) Dr Salum Suleiman Ali and Dr Mzee Mustafa Mzee stressed that journalists can make a difference if they are committed on promoting human rights, accountability, and inclusive democracy.<\/p>\n

Ms Issa said journalists have a great role to help address the social problems including ensuring the rights of every citizen including women who may be interested in participating in leadership and democratic processes while also promoting human rights.<\/p>\n

“You should do follow-ups or monitor implementation of programs in regard to respect of human rights, and looking at social accountability,” Dr Mzuri said as Mzee and Ali encouraged journalists to remain active in promoting human rights.<\/p>\n

Mzee said that journalists can do a lot to ensure gender equality in leadership, gender representation in decision-making bodies, and social accountability so as to increase women’s participation and leadership in civil society and political parties.<\/p>\n

“Strengthening human rights in general, women’s rights and addressing barriers to political participation are critical to achieving gender equality and female empowerment, that is why we want journalists to understand and monitor its implementation,” Dr Salum Ali said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
