Africa-Press<\/a> – Tanzania<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>HEALTH professionals in the country have encouraged individuals with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) to go for Covid-19 vaccination because it is safe for them.<\/p>\n

The government has already identified priority groups for the Covid-19 vaccinations, among them frontline health workers, the elderly and people with underlying health conditions.<\/p>\n

They said people with chronic diseases are vulnerable to Covid-19 infection with increased severity and mortality, so unless with contraindications, they are encouraged to receive vaccination for protection. In medicine, a contraindication is a specific situation in which a drug, procedure or surgery should not be used because it may be harmful to the person.<\/p>\n

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday on Covid-19 vaccination, Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) Director of Quality Services, Dr Tulizo Sanga said people of all ages can be infected with the novel coronavirus. However, individuals with underlying NCDs are particularly vulnerable to severe and fatal coronavirus disease.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaking the jab for people in that group is a crucial tool in reducing the disease, disability and death. The vaccine works by training and preparing the body\u2019s natural defences\u2013the immune system\u2013to recognise and fight against the bacteria and viruses they target,\u201d said Dr Sanga.<\/p>\n

Dr Sanga said patients with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension (and other cardiovascular diseases), chronic respiratory illnesses, chronic kidney and liver conditions are more likely to be affected by Covid-19. Once they get infected by the virus, patients with chronic illnesses have a much higher likelihood of having worse clinical outcomes.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter vaccination, if the body is later exposed to those disease-causing microorganisms, the body is at once ready to destroy them and prevent illness. Each year, vaccines save millions of lives and prevent infectious diseases, ranging from tetanus and measles to chronic diseases such as hepatitis and cervical cancer,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

He further said after receiving a Covid-19 vaccination, one may have some side effects, which is a normal sign that your body is building up protection from the virus. According to him, the side effects from the Covid-19 vaccination may feel like the flu and might even affect your ability to do some daily activities, but symptoms should go away in a few days.<\/p>\n

Some of the common side effects include pain, swelling, tiredness and headache. Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) Specialist in Internal Medicine and Kidney diseases, Dr Jonathan Mngumi said transplant patients should receive the Covid-19 vaccine which is safe for them.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be clear, any degree of protection from this deadly disease is better than no protection. Transplant patients may be more likely to have severe disease and need hospitalisation or care in the ICU, so please remember that the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks, which are often mild side effects,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Dr Mngumi said available data of transplant patients who have received the vaccine so far, indicate mild reactions unlike those of non-transplant patients.<\/p>\n

Side effects included mild, temporary soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, headache and fever.<\/p>\n

For patients waiting for a transplant, he said they should get the vaccination before transplant if possible as many transplant candidates have other health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or advanced kidney disease, which may put them at increased risk of severe Covid-19. The Tanzanian government joined the Covax facility programme for the vaccine on June 15 this year.<\/p>\n

On July 24 this year Dr Gwajima led the reception of the vaccine which came in a dose of 1,058,400 in the first phase, where she said the government plans to vaccinate 60 per cent of all Tanzanians.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
