Africa-Press<\/a> – Tanzania<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>THE World Health Organization (WHO) has applauded a successful roll out of the first dose of Oral Cholera Vaccination (OCV) in Zanzibar administered between July 3 and 8 this year in 58 Shehias in nine districts in Unguja and Pemba.<\/p>\n

The campaign targeted 327,000 people and its roll- out objective reached 90.4 per cent after huge response from the public.<\/p>\n

The turnout reflected optimism expressed by the Second Vice President of Zanzibar, Mr Hemed Ali Suleiman who launched it on July 4 this year at Magirisi grounds in Taveta Shehia.<\/p>\n

With financial support from Gavi, WHO provided the vaccines and technical support in the planning, preparation and execution of the campaign. UNICEF, Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Red Cross and Save the Children also partnered with the health ministry and WHO in planning and execution of the OCV campaign.<\/p>\n

Provision of oral cholera vaccine is among the strategies of the 10-year Zanzibar Comprehensive Cholera Elimination Plan (2018\/19 \u2013 2027\/28), commonly known as ZACCEP coordinated through the Office of the Second Vice President and executed by various government institutions including the Ministry of Health, Social Welfare, Elderly, Gender and Children.<\/p>\n

The plan has three pillars which are to create an enabling environment, to enhance the scope and effectiveness of preventative measures and to improve Zanzibar’s capacity to respond and contain localized outbreaks of cholera.<\/p>\n

Zanzibar is among the first territories to adopt the Global Roadmap for ending cholera and develop a Comprehensive Cholera Elimination Plan (ZACCEP) 2018\/19-2027\/28.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time Zanzibar administers a cholera vaccine. In 2009 cholera vaccination took place in four Shehias of Zanzibar under the support of the WHO, with financial help of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.<\/p>\n

The successful provision of the first dose of cholera vaccine gives hope that people will turn up to take the second dose, which will strengthen their immunity for three to five years.<\/p>\n

“We encourage people in Zanzibar to come for the second dose that will cement the immunity provided by the vaccine,” said Dr Ghirmay Andemichael, WHO Liaison Officer to Zanzibar.
