Africa-Press<\/a> – Tanzania<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>THE Nilo Nature Forest Reserve (NNFR) in the north-west of the East Usambara Mountains is seeking to benefit from cultural tourism as it welcomes local and foreign tourists to the attractive area in Tanga region.<\/p>\n

NNFR Chief Conservator, Mr Fabian Mkome said that the reserve that is the second largest contiguous forest block under protection after Amani Nature Reserve has potential for the establishment of strong ecotourism.<\/p>\n

The reserve that extends from Korogwe, Muheza and Mkinga districts is supporting a cultural group that is made by the youth and performs in different events such as weddings but mainly it is for entertaining tourists who visit the reserve.<\/p>\n

Mr Mkome said that funding of the cultural group has been for buying uniforms, drums and other equipment they need for their activities. The group is also used to motivate the public in environmental conservation and avoid activities such as setting fire on the forest or cutting trees.<\/p>\n

In the Nature Forest Reserve, there are special sites of cultural importance used by local people as worshiping sites. Such sites include Holy water point at Kizara ward where there is a myth that once upon a time an Anglican bishop blessed the place after feeling thirsty and water came out for drinking.<\/p>\n

“Even today the water is still trickling. Other special sites include a campsite known as Denmark close to Kizara village which is the largest camping site formerly used by Sikh Saw Mills for its logging crews. The road from Amani via Kizerui village towards Kizara village passes through this campsite,” said Mr Mkome.<\/p>\n

There are also Tuvui falls and Kwemakulo area where one can view the famous Saintpaulia and remnants of the Ocotea usambarensis patches are additional recreational areas in NNFR. The Zumbe Kuu falls near Kizerui village is at a height greater than 30 m in the Semdoe River. Two worship areas are found at Lutindi peak and Kwemkole village called ‘Hundu’.<\/p>\n

The NNFR is funded by the Eastern Arc Mountains Conservation Endowment Fund (EAMCEF) to the tune of about 22m\/- annually. The funds are meant for conserving the forest that is the source of different rivers and its water is highly used in agricultural activities down the stream.<\/p>\n

The reserve that covers an area of 6,025 hectares is owned by Central government under Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) Agency, Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. The reserve is included in East Usambara Man and Bioshere reserve (EUMAB).<\/p>\n

According to the research done by Frontier-Tanzania (2002), the reserve has the highest Biodiversity value compared to other forest reserves in East Usambara. Those include rare, endangered, vulnerable and threatened species of outstanding values.<\/p>\n

Additionally, NNFR is surrounded by 17 villages that have high culture diversity from various ethnic groups. Theose communities have traditional practices for the forest, varieties of dances and food types. The diversity of these ethnic groups could support cultural tourism.<\/p>\n

EAMCEF also supports the surrounding communities in activities such as beekeeping, fish farming and growth of different crops for sources of income so that the people do not encroach the reserve to cut trees.
