Africa-Press<\/a> – Tanzania<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>THE 2020 National Council for Technical Education report has cited low skilled workers dominating the Tanzanian workforce (84 per cent), medium-skilled (13 per cent) and high skilled (3 per cent).<\/p>\n

The data is in comparison to an average Lower Middleincome Country (LMIC) ratio of 55 per cent low skilled, 33 per cent medium-skilled, and 12 per cent high skilled workers.<\/p>\n

The trend has resulted in low productivity in various economic sectors of employment, business, entrepreneurship and others. And, while the government is embarking on critical solutions, the private sector has kept abreast providing technical education that fulfills the industrialization agenda by 2025.<\/p>\n

Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL), one of the leading beer makers, again shows its resilience and commitment to impact needy societies by providing free college education to students through the Kilimo Viwanda scholarship programme. The programme supports Kaole Wazazi College of Agriculture in Bagamoyo, Kilacha Agriculture Institute in Moshi, Igabiro Institute of Agriculture in Bukoba and St. Maria Goretti Agriculture Training Institute Iringa.<\/p>\n

One of the beneficiaries from Kilacha, Lucy Urio, who is set to complete her Diploma course in general agriculture, claimed how her life was before the scholarship.<\/p>\n

She said, \u201cIt was hard studying without college fees, sometimes I just had to sit in class without attending any exam and wait, probably for a miracle to get me through each year,\u201d Ms Urio attests after hearing from her college head about the opportunity, she rushed to apply and eventually got selected.<\/p>\n

She claims that the programme has changed her life, and most importantly, her learning through practical experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was privileged to visit the SBL plan in Moshi where I saw the beer-making process and learnt about special cereals such as barley, sorghum, and maize,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Lucy looks forward to her future with optimism. She wants to take her unwavering experience to the community and become a prominent farmer who will provide cereals for SBL.<\/p>\n

She studies hard to prepare for each exam to pass with good grades at the end of her college semester this year. So far, the programme has helped over 70 students study agricultural-related courses in local colleges like Kaole Wazazi College (Bagamoyo), St. Maria Goretti Agriculture Training Institute (Iringa), Igabiro Training Institute of Agriculture and Kilacha Agriculture and Livestock Center (Moshi).<\/p>\n

In this year\u2019s window, SBL targets to sponsor a hundred students to study agricultural studies. And, according to the beer maker, apart from the financial support, they provide the students with opportunities to learn other life skills and gain practical experience through activities such as brewery visits, field attachments to the farms, mentorship, entrepreneurship training and other forms of exposure.<\/p>\n

The programme envisions students becoming professional farm extension officers and even joining SBL\u2019s vast network of over 400 local farmers in eight regions, such as Mwanza, Mara, Shinyanga, Arusha, Manyara, Moshi, Singida and Iringa, where SBL sources 70 per cent equivalent to 17,000 tons of cereals essential for beer production, such as maize, sorghum and barley.<\/p>\n

In exchange, the company provides farmers with free seeds, field technical services and linking them to financial institutions to access credit facilities.<\/p>\n

As agriculture continues to be the backbone of the majority in Tanzania, SBL continues to share its commitment to the mantra of \u2018industrialization through agriculture\u2019 by ensuring college students gain practical knowledge that creates room for employment and higher income.<\/p>\n

On top of that, it ensures food security and environmental conservation and provides valuable economic contributions to rural communities and the nation.<\/p>\n

Moreover, other stakeholders should follow the same example in harmony with the government\u2019s efforts to improve the educational system\u2019s quality from theory to practice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
