Africa-Press<\/a> – Tanzania<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>THE Vice-President Dr Philip Mpango has directed contractors and supervisors of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHP) to observe quality and standards during its construction, so that any future disaster as a result of it is kept at bay.<\/p>\n

Dr Mpango issued the directive on Tuesday, during his visit to the project which upon com- pletion will have the capacity to produce 2,115 megawatts of power.<\/p>\n

The Vice-President went to the site by train and witnessed various ongoing construction works.<\/p>\n

He told consultant engineers to trace a source of any shortfall that might occur as a result of the implementation and cause a big impact to Tanzanians, who have invested 6.6tri\/- into the scheme.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf any shortcoming will occur it is better to make early professional interventions to ensure that quality is observed to avert future disasters,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Dr Mpango argued that Tanzania cannot build industrial economy without reliable and enough power which will come from the JNHP.<\/p>\n

Apart from that the Vice- President congratulating Tanzanians who were involved in construction of the project, he reminded them to also demonstrate patriotism, because their names will remain in the country\u2019s history, adding: \u201cContinue paying taxes since through taxes the country makes strides in development.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe intention of President Samia Suluhu Hassan is to ensure that this project is completed, and with this pace I am satisfied.\u201d<\/p>\n

Equally, congratulating the Energy Minister January Makamba and Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) for continuing supervising well the project, he said Tanzanians should feel and own the project as theirs.<\/p>\n

In the same vein, he used the platform to pray for leaders who had dreamt of constructing that project including the father of the nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, and the late John Magufuli, saying their dreams are now coming true.<\/p>\n

On environmental issues, he urged Regional and District Commissioners in regions surrounding the Rufiji Basin to ensure that tributaries, which feed water into Rufiji River always, have water by protecting catchment areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you go against this directive, I will use my powers to take stern action against you,\u201d he vowed.<\/p>\n

He urged political leaders including MPs to use public rallies to educate their electorates on the importance of protecting environment, since Rufiji River depends on getting water from the various tributaries in the areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am worried about arbitrary cutting down of trees and burning of forests because this situation will ruin our project,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
