Africa-Press – Tanzania. <\/strong><\/span>THE government in Kilimanjaro Region has thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan for increasing the amount of the allocated funds meant for the construction and maintenance of roads in the region.<\/p>\n

Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Stephen Kagaigai said this during the signing occasion of road construction and maintenance contracts for the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (Tarura), which was held in Moshi, within the region, on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government has allocated a total of 22.7bn\/- in the financial year 2021\/2022 for road projects in the region; this amount is large compared to the previous years when the amount used to be less than 10bn\/-. Upon completion, these projects will address the challenges which residents used to face due to impassable roads,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He continued to say that in ensuring that the regional administration supported the president’s decision to direct the increase in funding for Kilimanjaro Region road projects, the leadership within the region will closely monitor the implementation of the projects.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to achieve this goal, may I direct as from now on, the Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) be handed over the copies of all contracts signed for the implementation of various projects, including the one signed today, this will enable the regional administration to facilitate the issue of monitoring the implementation of relevant projects,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI urge the contractors entrusted with the task of implementing these projects to ensure that they are completed on time to alleviate the suffering of the people that they may experience especially during the expected forthcoming rainy season”.<\/p>\n

Mr Kagaigai expressed his optimism that the contractors will implement the projects to the required quality standards and that the value for money set aside for such projects would be realized.<\/p>\n

Earlier, in his statement, the Tarura Kilimanjaro Regional Manager, Engineer Nicholas Francis said that a total of 14 contracts had been signed at the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe signing of the contracts is the second phase in the financial year 2021\/2022 and it was preceded by the first phase whereby a total of 28 contracts were signed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He continued to say that a total of 68 tenders had been announced for implementation of road projects in the region, whereby he said that the third phase of the signing of the other contracts was expected to be held in November this year.<\/p>\n

Eng Francis went on to say that there were a total of 4,617 km road network in Kilimanjaro region, whereby 49 per cent of the roads within the network were in poor condition.<\/p>\n

“Within this network, 183 km are roads which are of tarmac level; the contracts which we signed today and others which we expect to sing in the future will contribute significantly to the improvement of the road conditions in Kilimanjaro region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
